Chicago Ordinance for Tougher Cyclist Protection.

February 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

If you’ve ridden enough in metro Chicago – you are bound to have a story to share on that one ignoramus incident in which you’ve been hit by a vehicle.  Tempers flare, expletives spew, and perhaps hurt bodies result.  Hizzoner would like to make that experience stand out more for offending motorists.  A new ordinance was proposed yesterday to help protect the commuting cyclist and provide a more stringent attitude among the boys in blue to actually enforce protection for cyclists.  Some of this protection comes in the new mandate for a minimum distance between cars and a bike lane, and some of it comes in the form of hefty fines for motorists that cause harm to a cyclist by minding the rule that ignorance is not bliss when opening your car door (minimum of a $500 fine).

Read more here and support the CBF and the Mayor’s Office in the ways that you can to keep our friends safe on the road.  It was proposed and hopefully it will get passed (most cycling friendly legislation doesn’t get too slammed in the mayor’s self oiled machine).
